There has always been a question whether Hawaii Christian singles or any Christian single for that matter should date a non-Christian. It crops up in most relationships at some point in the relationship. In this case, you can consider the term ‘equally yoked’, which comes from 2 Corinthians 6:14. The verse states that you should not be yoked together with unbelievers, and asks what righteousness and wickedness have in common, or whether light can fellowship with darkness.  Such is what is depicted by the concept in Deuteronomy 22:10, which categorically states that you should not plow an ox and a donkey together.

Perhaps this should answer the question affecting many Hawaii Christian singles, although an explanation for this should suffice. In Judaism, the donkey was considered unclean while the ox was clean. The two animals also have different habits and a clear distinction in strength and abilities. If you think about it, the plow might move in circles instead of vertically straight since they are not matched equally. The quote in Corinthians is not exactly on marriage, but Paul’s act of admonishing the Christians from Corinth to stick together and do away with non-Christians. He is not telling the Christians to disassociate from the non-believers, but not to be bound in things and ways that could affect their walk with God.  

For Hawaii Christian singles, the idea is to understand the point the verses make. A non-Christian and a Christian have different lives and natures and they can never be matched spiritually. Immediately after our relationship with Christ, marriage is the next significant relationship in the life of man, and God hardly wants believers to share such an important act of commitment with a non-Christian.

Another thing that affects Hawaii Christian singles is the idea of Christian and missionary dating, which is a very interesting way of dating. This is dating a non-believer for the sake of evangelism, or what many who practice it claim. This is done in the wrong motivation though. The evangelism is not done to glorify God, which is the duty of every Christian, but because of attraction existing between the two. The idea is to lead the non-believer to Christ and date the person, as well as marrying the individual if all goes well. The Hawaii Christian singles who practice this might be feeling desperate or excruciatingly impatient, and they really do not like to limit their options through restricting their pool of available partners to the believers only.

This is planting seeds of discord and the marriage will be as miserable as many have become. It is a bad idea and not worth it while the basis of the relationship is wrong in the eyes of the lord.  Dating should not be occasioned unless you believe you are heading towards marriage and because God has commanded believers not to marry non-believers, dating them either is wrong.  Some things might seem farfetched but it is what the doctrine of the bible and the command of God through His word stipulate.

Answer: For a Christian, dating a non-Christian is unwise, and marrying one is not an option. Second Corinthians 6:14 (KJV) tells us not to be “unequally yoked” with an unbeliever. The imagery is of two incompatible oxen sharing the same yoke. Instead of working together to pull the load, they would be working against each other. While this passage does not specifically mention marriage, it definitely has implications for marriage. The passage goes on to say that there is no harmony between Christ and Belial (Satan). There can be no spiritual harmony in a marriage between a Christian and a non-Christian. Paul goes on to remind believers that they are the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, who inhabits their hearts at salvation (2 Corinthians 6:15-17). Because of that, they are to be separate from the world—in the world, but not of the world—and nowhere is that more important than in life’s most intimate relationship—marriage.

The Bible also says, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character’ (1 Corinthians 15:33). Having any kind of intimate relationship with an unbeliever can quickly turn into something that is a hindrance to your walk with Christ. We are called to evangelize the lost, not be intimate with them. There is nothing wrong with building quality friendships with unbelievers, but that is as far as it should go. If you were dating an unbeliever, what would honestly be your priority, romance or winning a soul for Christ? If you were married to an unbeliever, how would the two of you cultivate a spiritual intimacy in your marriage? How could a quality marriage be built and maintained if you disagree on the most crucial issue in the universe—the Lord Jesus Christ?
